#217 Church of Saint Varvara


Located deep in trees and shrubs, in the beautiful Astrochori of Arta meet the church of St. Varvara, the location of which was formerly a monastery dedicated to her memory.

Construction Data

The building of the church was undertaken by a Tzoumperikotian master whose name was Costas. The church has a rectangular shape with dimensions of 17.15 m. Length, 10.50 m. Wide. The construction was completed in 1860 and was inaugurated several years later in 1923. The chancel of the church was constructed in the year 1872. The church is built in a stunning location, dominated by many waters and perennial trees.

Historical Data

The original monastery belonged to the diocese of Radoviziou, which established the village Velenziko. It had a small temple, an abbey, and storage cells. The monastery was surrounded by a lime-surrounding wall with ten turrets, which the villagers called "bun". The monastery of Agia Varvara was ravaged by Kurt Pasha,a general martinet of Epirus, Thessaly and Central Greece.
