#153 Misiou Mansion

Location

In Aesop street dominates with its presence, one of the most important 19th century mansions in the city.

Construction Data

The mansion of Misios, a leading specimen of residential construction, brilliantly showcases the local architecture. The house was built in May 1844 on the ruins of an earlier construction. Main materials of the bulky "Π" shaped construction, were wood and stone.

At first glance, notable are the high walls surrounding the building and ensuring security and privacy to its occupants. Crossing the heavy door, we encounter the courtyard of the mansion, where there was a covered well. On the impressive facade, the double staircase with arches and glazing really stand out.

The building is spread over three levels and their pinpointing position is no different from that of most homes of that time. The ground floor houses the utility and storage rooms as well as the rooms of the staff. On the mezzanine floor, workplaces and office owners are situated. At the last level we find the sun terrace and family rooms.

All spaces stand out for their elegance and magnificence. Fireplaces and ceilings with ornate decorations adorn the main rooms of the mansion, while the wood paneling on the walls further enhances the grandeur of the house. The furniture consists of collectible pieces, which the owners have transferred from all around the world.

Highly informative is the description of Ioannite architect Aristotelis Zachos in Epirotica Chronika magazine: "the house in all the areas features especially large cabinets-closets-which are permanent and oftentimes inserted in the walls. The space above the cabinets either stays open or is closed when someone arrives into it through a narrow and upward passage located inside the cabinet and connected to the adjacent room. This space, called "dipaton" (two-storey place), serves as a kind of loft for the stay of women during the receptions and entertainments of men. The virgins and young girls, as known, from their 12th year of age were kept hidden from the eyes of men. Such Interactions and entertainment of men were watched by the girls unseen, through small windows overlooking the room walls or towards the sunny side of the upper gallery. Such a kind of dipata served as galleries were rescued in both Christian and Muslim homes in Ioannina and Epirus in general. Should be noted that the use of these is uncommon in the houses in Macedonia where they are not encountered. "

#159 Metropolic Church of Saint Athanasius

Location

The imposing church of Mitropoleos Street, in the form we know it today, started in 1831 and was only completed in 1833.

Construction Data

The imposing church of Mitropoleos Street, in the form we know it today, started in 1831 and was only completed in 1833. The worship complex includes, besides the katholikon of the monastery, the spire and some auxiliary spaces.

The main temple is a three-aisled basilica, with double soffits, covered with enclosed arches, and roofed with slate.

In the interior, the elegant decor stands out. The iconographic section of the church was completed in 1835 by hagiographers Constantine and Theodosios, while in 1901 and 1940 two more unsuccessful interventions were made to the hagiography of the church. A monument of particular importance is the wooden iconostasis made by artists Anastasios Skalistis and Constantine's sons, Giannis and Demetrios, which depicts scenes from the natural environment and the New Testament.

Historical Data

Ambiguity is covering the date of construction of the cathedral, although scholars place it before the Fall of 1430. With certainty, however, they suggest that the temple predates the revolution of Dionysios Philosophos, after reportedly was saved from the destructive fury of the Pasha. Unfortunately it didn't have the a similar fate in 1820, when it was destroyed by the fire which was caused by Ali Pasha to prevent the advent of the troops of the Sultan.

#161 Mosque of Aslan Pasha

Location

On the northern Acropolis of the castle, in the area named "Goulas", where the church of St. John the Baptist was located, one of the leading examples of Islamic devotional architecture haughtily dominates.

Construction Data

Inside, as we are informed by Sot. Zoumbos, it features the central hall with an area of 10x10 and a height of 12 meters, ending up in conches, where its dome rests.

The impressive Mosque is distinguished for both its striking exterior, as well its elegant interior. Inside the mosque, we note the rich interior decoration, which includes painting and sculptural representations, excerpts of the Koran, while at a central spot the names of the first caliphs and sultans of Islam were written.

Predominating colors are green hues which refer to Islam. Impressive also is the high number of windows of the ambulatories, which had crystal glazing while there are reports that point to the pompousness of the carpets of the mosque.

Historical Data

The Aslan Pasha Mosque, built in the 17th century, impresses for its fine lines and lighthearted style. The 12m high edifice was erected by Aslan Pasha as a symbol of dominance by the Turkish authorities against the Greek rebels led by Dionysios Philosophos. The unfortunate rebellion had devastating consequences for the Greeks, as many Christian monuments were destroyed and much of the population was slaughtered.
