#143 Monastery of Saint Athanasios (Delvinaki)

On the Northeastern side of Delvinaki village, 200 meters from the central square of the village, lies the Monastery of Agios Athanasios

The monastery was founded in the 13th century, and since 1700, is the parish church of the village.

Architecturally, is a single-aisled basilica, which includes the narthex-gynaeceum, the main temple and the sanctuary.

Internally, paintings in Byzantine style are seen, which adorn the main part of the temple and the sanctuary.

Striking is the iconostasis of the church, the work of a folk artist, while significant portable paintings also adorn the temple.

#144 Monastery of Prophet Ilias (Delvinaki)

Location

Nestled in a lush green area, overgrown with oaks and maples, on top of the hill of the same name, in the northeast of Delvinaki village lies the Monastery of Profitis Elias

Construction Data

The church is not preserved in its original form. Nowadays, only the katholikon is saved, along with a damaged water tank and some ruins of the original building.

In its current form, the church is a single-aisled basilica, which consists of the narthex and the sanctuary. Characteristic of the building is the fact that the narthex lies at a higher level than the main temple and is separated from it by a wall. The construction is covered by a wooden roof. The nave has two indoor domes while a carved wooden iconostasis separates it from the sanctuary.

The decoration of the temple is austere, while the templon is adorned with despotic images of Virgin Mary, Jesus Christ and Prophet Elias.

The imposing building in the center of the traditional village, housed the Boys School and the Girls' School of Delvinaki.

#147 Avel Monastery

Location

In a verdant area near the village of Vissani, lies the Abel Monastery.

Construction Data

The monastery in the past was consisted of the katholikon, the bell tower and a building which housed the cells. Also around the monastery, a series of auxiliary spaces developed. The monastery complex was surrounded by high walls.

Today, from with previous installations, only the katholikon and a small building near the church are saved. The katholikon of the monastery is a single-aisled basilica with a dome and a semicircular conch at the north and south sides. Distinctive features include the fortification measures which were provisioned, and include embrasures at the entrance of the church, a wooden bar behind the door and a wooden latch.

Inside the Monastery the narthex, the nave and the sanctuary are present. Virtually the whole of the Temple is adorned with exquisite frescoes, which are preserved in a good condition. The illustration of the church dates back to 1770 while it was assigned to Chioniadites painters Constantinos and Michael. The interesting templon of the monastery is was built later, dating back to 1816 and crafted by the method of "embroidery".

Location

On the right of the road leading to Agios Kosmas, on a hill full of oak trees, lies the old and derelict monastery Giourchan that onto its ruins is built the church of Virgin Mary (1736). #149 Girls' School (Vissani)

Location

A notable example of folk architecture, which survives even in the village, is the Girls' School, built in 1873.

Construction Data

The construction of the remarkable edifice was undertaken by the "Areti" Educational Vissanioton Society of Istanbul. The construction was funded by contributions from the Vissaniotes living abroad and by donations from the benefactor Christakis Zografos. It is a spacious building, which retains the characteristics of Epirotical architecture of the era. The building stands out for the impressive construction, a fact which demonstrates the financial affluence of the inhabitants.

It consists of a single building, on facade of which a vaulted entrance can be seen. The facade is complemented by facade two sets of windows. The structure is covered with a tiled hipped roof.

In the interior, the decor was affected the local aesthetics, which are distinguished for the traditional fabrics and textiles, while the wooden structures dominate both in furnishings and in the decoration, while particularly interesting it is exhibited inside the building, by an axial dividing colonnade, with wooden pillars and a characteristic triangular roof.

#150 Boys' School (Vissani)

Location

The Boys School, of Vissiani still adorns the traditional village, reminiscent of the earlier era of prosperity, which gave the area a series of remarkable architectural monuments.


Construction Data

The building was designed by architect Kazamias and was built in 1890 at the initiative of"Areti", the Educational Fraternity of Vissaniotes of Istanbul. The plans had been sent from Istanbul while the construction was funded by contributions from the Vissaniotes of Istanbul. An active role in funding, was undertaken by benefactor Christakis Zografos, while money were given through bank transfer from Crete, Cyprus, Minor Asia and Egypt.

The building, which stands out for its red facade, features distinct characteristics of the local architecture. Stone is the predominant building material, also adorning part of the facade. The rectangle windows are symmetrically placed and the building features a noteworthy arched doorway at the entrance.

The spacious interior although oriented on serving the operational needs, is adorned with wooden ceilings and large stone arches which support the building.

#151 Monastery of Makraleksi

Location

In an inaccessible place, on the foothills of Mt. Mourgana, lies one of the most historic monastic complexes in the area.


Construction Data

The interior consists of the narthex, the nave and the sanctuary. The temple is covered by an octagonal dome, while an atmosphere of devoutness is created by the scant light that enters from the four roof lights of the dome.

The monastery stood out both for its size and for its wealth. Sources mention that it contained 20 cells, where 70 monks lived, and significant were the hectares of land in its possession. Part of its proceeds was given to aid residents, thereby playing a major social role.

The illustration of the monastery, which was completed in 1902, was done by painters Nikolaos and Michael from Linotopi of Kastoria. The rare pictorial work has suffered damages because of time and poor maintenance over the past. Within the monastery, historical, religious heirlooms were kept such as relics of saints, portable paintings and Gospels, which however perished.

Historical Data

The monastery was originally built in the 11th century but was destroyed and rebuilt in 1585. In the form that is found today, is located since 1950, following the damage suffered during the Second World War.

Almost every village has surprises that challenge/cause the visitor to explore them.

Kefalovryso, the old big village of the area develops intense economic activity even today, because, apart from the livestock activities, it hosts the machining factory, the well-known "Metallurgical Industry", in which euro coins have been manufactured.

Dolo is one of the most beautiful villages in the region. Since 1978 it is a featured traditional settlement, due to its significant architectural features, which were stockpile.

Apart from people's works, Dolo is also endowed by nature, which gave it a unique landscape that is formed around Kouvaras' ravine.

Palaiopyrgos village has also a strong archaeological interest, as on the banks of Gormos river, in Plasi and Palioura location, the archaeological excavations brought to light two settlements of the early iron age.

Delvinaki has been the historical centre of Pogoni for years.

A village which stands out both for its rare beauty and its architectural heritage is Visani.

In Oreokastro village there are the sources of Glava, from which Gormos River is formed.

One of the most important economic and administrative centres of the region and the headquarters of the municipality of Ano Kalamas is Parakalamos which is located at an altitude of 400 m. and is 45km. away from Ioannina.

A unique natural gem of the area is Zaravina Lake. The Lake is included in the area of the Natura 2000 network, under the name "Mount Douskon, Oraiokastro, Meropi forest, Gormos plain, Lake of Delvinaki (GR 2130010)" band indeed is one of the main reasons for the integration of the region in the European network of protected areas.

In an area of rich vegetation and fascinating nature, there are the ravine and the waterfalls of Kalamas.

One of the most beautiful villages of the region, Pogoniani, stands out both for its natural environment and its cultural contribution.

Built amphitheatrically, near Greek-Albanian borders, lies Staurodromi village. Amongst its buildings, St Ioannis' the Baptist church stands out, which was built in 1183 and is one of the oldest monasteries in Epirus.

Near to the frontier station and to the custom of Kakavia, there is Ktismata village.
